Procedure: Sending Files Over the Internet for EvaluationThere are two basic ways to transmit files over the Internet. First, files can be sent and received as an e-mail attachment. This is simple and often sufficient, but may be subject to restrictions on size imposed by the sender's or the receiver's ISP; and if it fails, then the entire file has to be sent again from scratch. Furthermore, it is difficult to get a confirmation that the file has been received correctly. Second, files can also be sent via FTP (file transfer protocol) which is based on a set of programs: a server on the Internet that receives, holds, and sends the file or files as requested, and a client program on the individual's computer that sends the file or files out to the server or goes to the server to get them. FTP has the advantage that it can handle larger files than those attached to an e-mail, and if interrupted it can restart from where it left off and not have to start the whole process over again from the beginning. It also gives you a better idea of whether the file has been sent or received correctly. Key to symbols used on this page{ } a value to be filled in as appropriate (eg, "select {filename}"
